Medicine is the branch of health science concerned with maintaining human health, preventing ill health, or restoring health by treating disease and injury. It can mean many things: for example, it is an area of knowledge, the science of health, the applied practice of that knowledge, as well as, the products used to restore health. As an area of knowledge, Medicine can have many branches like pediatrics, gynecology, neurology and others. However, it is as the science of health, and the derivative products of therapeutic value, that have the greatest significance to all of us. Medicine as an antidote against ailments, problems, diseases, syndromes, conditions is one of the oldest human endeavors. Associated with religion and mysticism during its earliest phase (it still is in many areas), medicine as a study of health has progressed far and wide and has spawned a surprising variety of therapeutic systems around the world. However, the ultimate object of all these systems is the same – restoration and maintenance of human well being.
Medicine as therapeutic products is the medium that ultimately restores our health. And therefore, medicine (in this meaning) holds the greatest significance for us. Human endeavor has given us such blessings as the penicillin, the aspirin, the quinine, and the insulin which are life saving. These, and the thousands more from every medical system have assured not only that we restore our health, but also that we maintain a presence as a species (one can well imagine what would have happened after the bigger epidemics without a proper antidote or vaccine).
