Lincoln-Mercury is often named in a same breath, since these two Ford Motor Company divisions are usually sold side-by-side in a single dealership. The older generation remembers these two revered brand names for the popular The Ed Sullivan Show, a show that ran from 1948 until 1962 and made Lincoln-Mercury a household name. In return Lincoln-Mercury saved The Ed Sullivan Show from the brink of closure by sponsoring its shows.
Lincoln, started in 1917 and operational since 1920s, is a luxury brand of Ford Motor Company. Ford acquired Lincoln from founder Henry M. Leland (one of the founders of Cadillac) in 1922.
In its long and illustrious history, Lincoln had debuted many popular models and ground breaking innovations. Lincoln-Zephyr, introduced in the year 1936, increased Lincoln sales almost ninefold. The hand built Continental proved to be the most important car ever made by Lincoln. Town Car, Continental's top trim level, went onto be a brand of its own from the year 1981. By late 1990s, Lincoln was the best selling luxury brand in the United States, thanks to the phenomenal success of the Navigator SUV. In its effort to revive the sagging image of Lincoln of late, Ford has introduced few new models, such as the Mark LT pickup in 2006, Lincoln MKZ, an upgraded Zephyr, and the MKX Crossover SUV.
In 1939, Edsel Ford, son of Henry Ford, launched Mercury line of automobiles, as an entry level luxury segment, positioned between the Ford-branded regular models and Lincoln-branded luxury vehicles. Mercury brand had always been associated with performance. Currently, all Mercury models are based on Ford platforms.
Mercury is scheduled to be phased out starting 2010, a process that is estimated to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2010. After the closure of Mercury, Ford will only focus its attention on the Lincoln brand, besides the regular Ford models. Currently the Mercury brand only represents less than one percent of United States automobile market. Ford has assured that it will launch more models under the Lincoln brand to compensate for the closure of Mercury. Since most of the dealers sell both Lincoln-Mercury brands from a single dealership, those dealers will start selling only Lincoln brand.
