It is not quite known when first human flight occurred, although the aspiration to fly were born independently in most civilizations. Tales of early flights in various machines – ranging from hot air balloons, to kites and other gliders – date back from the 4th century AD, although it was as late as the late 18th century that the first recorded human flight took place on a hot air balloon. The famous flight by the Wright Brothers have become famous as the starting point in man’s journey in the sky, but the fact remains that efforts in this direction were made much before.

Regardless of these efforts, flight – whether on gliders or balloons or fixed-wing machines – were risky, and hence experimental in nature. It was not until the success of Zeppelins that safe and popular travel through the air became possible. These humongous lighter than air creatures showed the real possibilities of mass transit of humans and goods. The First and the Second World Wars inspired the greatest compositions in all areas of human endeavor, and manned aerial flights received a huge boost through development of war planes. Cost of flight, carrying capacity and speed of travel, safety concerns, etc were real constraints on profitable use of aircrafts as a mode of travel; however, continuous improvements and improvisation over-rode such concerns and air travel became a reality during the inter-war years, while it matured after the WW II.

Air travel opened up unforeseen possibilities. The speed of travel meant large distances were covered quickly. It was cheaper in the sense that roads and other infrastructure need not be built; today, the per-mile cost of travel in commercial flights turn out to be cheaper than inter-city buses. Evolution have resulted in safer travel, and despite the many air crashes, air travel is relatively more safe (expressed in terms of ratio between total people traveled by total people dead) than road travel. The tremendously fast growth of air travel took many by surprise, but many be explained in terms of speed, cost, novelty and ease. Today, all corners of the world are charted by aircrafts. Numerous companies provide travel services to those who want to travel. The fortunate few who can afford their own aircrafts also mostly use public facilities for take-off, landing and parking.
